History:
The populist Fiat 500 had been the basis for countlessvariants over the decades, both coachbuilt and homemade. The introduction ofthe all-new postwar Fiat was quickly followed by that of a related upmarketvariant representing a joint venture between that automaker, Pirelli, and thevenerable firm Bianchi; the result was Autobianchi, and its first product wasthe Bianchina Trasformabile. Advertised as La piccola vettura di grande classe(“The small car of great class”), the Bianchina was based on the 500 platformand shared its mechanicals, but cloaked everything in very different stylingcredited to Fabio Luigi Rapi, head of Fiat’s special coachwork department.
Trasformabile (“transformable”) was both the name andfunctional description of the 117.5-inch-long car’s open-top body style. Itechoed that of the prewar Ford Model A-400 Convertible Sedan and postwar NashRambler Convertible Landau, having a soft top that slid back on tracks to foldatop the rear deck.
