1972 BMW 2002 E10

Original rare Nevada color, high end restoration. This BMW is an original southern CA survivor which has been restored and updated as a high end/performance daily driver. Has been driven regularly, and has been a fun local meeting car. It runs and drives excellent, smooth idle, fast and responsive, and very reliable. Often get compliments and unsolicited offers and never thought I’d sell it.

A list of engine /suspension upgrades are listed below / end of ad.

Details

History: Originally purchased at CA BMW dealership in 1972, car was kept with meticulous owner who logged all work by dealer in back of the manual (included) until the mid 80’s. Original owner sold in early 90s to second owner, and appears Im the third owner.

VIN is matching on steering wheel tag, body imprint, and original VIN plate in engine bay. However original engine was replaced with a later 2.0L M10/E21 rebuilt motor.

Engine: Fast, smooth, and peppier E21 engine conversion done about 30k miles ago. The E21 (1977/78 BMW 320i) has more horsepower than a 2002 engine, this one rebuilt with high compression pistons and a mild cam. It Has 32/36 weber, and many of the the common 2002 performance upgrades. Has a mild cam, kept it more of a daily street drive build, however enthusiasts have said by adding a 38/38 Weber that this setup would make a nice race car. It’s already pretty fast and faster than a stock Tii, so never swapped the carb. Has header, and a fairly new Ireland Engineering exhaust and muffler – which is very nice upgrade over stock – made of all stainless steel, high performance, uses all stock mounting, and has nice sound.
Transmission: Original 4 speed.

Body: Original Nevada color looked pretty bad, however had all original solid steel panels, no bondo, and no rust anywhere on or under car except a spot of rust in the spare tire well (which was cut out and replaced with steel). Car was re-sprayed by a shop that did a high quality prep/sand/primer and two layer paint, with photos. The paint turned out very nice, gets compliments all the time. There are no dents that I can find, and is kept covered indoors. The sunroof works great, was rebuilt when car was painted.
Windshield seal, rear window seal, door seals, and trunk seal were all replaced.

Trim: Original bumpers and bumperettes re-chromed. Aluminum trim is all original, and the main upper belt trim around the car was stripped and re-dipped professionally, has no dents and looks like new.

Interior: Original tobacco interior front seats were re-padded and re-upholstered. Rear seat is original as it still looks good. Original carpet was replaced with the same three color spec German carpet. Headliner is original and while it doesn’t look bad, it is original and has some stains and down the road someone might want to replace it to match the rest of the restoration. Not sure why it wasn’t done when car was redone but it wasn’t. Door panels are original, dashboard a crack. Gauges, lights, interior light, turn indicators, levers all work.

Suspension/Tires: H&R Sport Springs, KYB Gas-Adjust shocks & strut inserts, strut support brace in front and rear, new cooper tires, Ireland Engineering bushings. I like the look of the original steel wheels and hubcaps, and it rides very nice. I do hear it from enthusiasts that with higher performance engine a lot of guys run later model (74-76) 2002 14” alloy rims and wider tires. I’ll leave that up to the new owner.

Stereo: Hands free (mic installed) Bluetooth, CD, Pandora, Pioneer stereo with full iphone or mp3 integration (shows tracks on screen). Four speakers, two in doors and two in rear deck. Remote and Stereo manual included.
