Ferrari 400i, introduced in 1976, was a successor to the 365 GT/4 2+2. A four-passenger GT car, it has a Pininfarina-designed body and optional automatic transmission. Produced in limited numbers, it is considered by many to be a contemporary classic.
4,823-cc, 310-hp DOHC V-12 engine, three-speed automatic transmission, four-wheel coil spring independent suspension and four-wheel power hydraulic disc brakes. Wheelbase: 106.3-inches
Ferrari neglected to build a convertible version of the 400i, but some customers were not to be deprived. Straman stepped in to fill the void, however, charging "just" $40,000 extra for the conversion. The workmanship is excellent and created a market for California customizer Richard Straman of Costa Mesa, who over the last 40 years has converted countless Ferraris and other exotic cars to soft-top configuration. This involves more than simply removing the roof, as the chassis must be strengthened to withstand addition stresses.
